Whether delivered in cylinders at the point of use or provided in a pipeline system, air for breathing must be carefully filtered to remove oil droplets and other debris.
A medical air supply may also be used for other purposes such as driving air-operated drills and saws, and for driving ventilators. Free-standing pumps are also available for generating clean air for breathing machines. Piped medical air is usually delivered at 4 or 7 bar (60 or 105 psi).
