MECHANICAL THUMB VENTILATOR

Typical Number in Hospital: 1 Cost Bands: 4 References: 2

For artificial ventilation in a T-piece circuit (valveless) used particularly for anaesthesia in infants, this device uses an electrically operated solenoid to block the free end of the breathing tube during inspiration so that the lungs are inflated by the fresh gas feed. The solenoid is released during expiration so that the patient can exhale by elastic recoil of the lungs. The control unit consists of timing devices and perhaps a pressure gauge. The Sheffield paediatric ventilator and the Amsterdam infant ventilator are machines of this type.
