X-ray imaging of the breasts presents a special problem since they contain a range of soft tissues with little difference in their X-ray absorption. The solution is to provide soft X-rays with a photon energy of between 12 and 30 keV and it is usual to use a special X-ray set and tube. The tube usually has a molybdenum anode and a beryllium window and the X-ray cassette usually has a single fluorescent screen with a single emulsion film with very fine grain. Since the detail is important it is common to use vacuum cassettes to ensure intimate contact between the screens (if any) and the film.
