A central piped medical gas supply is provided in larger hospitals for reasons of economy of scale. In the case of oxygen it can be provided more cheaply by the use of a liquid oxygen reservoir since larger quantities can be stored and delivered at one time. The oxygen is stored in an outside reservoir which can be filled without disconnecting the supply. The reserve is monitored on a force platform to estimate the weight of the remaining oxygen.
Some heating is required to bring the resulting gas up to a suitable temperature and it is usual to have a back-up supply of gaseous oxygen in cylinder banks. The maintenance of these (liquid) systems is normally performed by the suppliers.
