Small electric currents from mains powered apparatus may unintentionally pass through the patient. Since these currents are normally very small they are not perceived by the hospital staff. There has been considerable attention paid to assessing the magnitudes of these currents which may be hazardous in patients, and to ensuring that equipment items do not individually or collectively deliver dangerous levels of leakage current, even when the equipment is faulty. For further information see Earth leakage current monitor.
