This measures electrical impedance through the larynx during sound production (phonation), providing an electrical waveform which can be displayed on a cathode ray tube. The waveform can be examined for normal, falsetto, creaky, and pathological patterns, and can also show frequency changes. Two electrodes are applied superficially to the neck while the patient speaks. Such devices are used in the speech therapy department.
An alternative name for this instrument is the electroglottograph, and an extended version including a display of the speech fundamental frequency is called a voiscope.
