This normally refers to a rectilinear scanner for producing a map of the sites of radioactivity within a particular organ. The isotopes (radionuclides) are usually administered attached to a chemical (radiopharmaceutical) that is absorbed or used by the organ under study (e.g. thyroid, liver, blood, bone). The scanner uses a scintillation counter to map the extent of uptake of the agent. They are used in the nuclear medicine or X-ray department.
