This is an old name for a radionuclide generator, for the continuous production of short-life radioactive isotopes (radionuclides). An arrangement in common use in hospitals (in the medical physics or nuclear medicine department) is a column containing molybdenum-99 as ammonium molybdate. This continually produces technetium-99m, which has a short half-life (6 hours) and is much used in nuclear medicine. The technetium can be flushed out of the column with saline, and appears as sodium pertechnetate.
