IRON LUNG

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: 4 References: 2

This is an early type of breathing machine (ventilator) now almost fallen into disuse. The patient is placed in a cabinet sealed at the neck leaving only the head outside. The pressure in the cabinet is cycled so that the chest is forced to expand and contract with the pressure in the cabinet, so ventilating the lungs. These were relatively inefficient. Air would also be drawn into the stomach, nursing was extremely difficult, and the seal at the neck difficult to maintain.
