This usually refers to the application of drugs through the skin as a result of positive ion transport caused by passing an electric current into the body. The apparatus required is a direct current generator of a few microamperes, and the drug is often a specially prepared hydrocortisone solution, applied under the positive electrode. In this example, pain and inflammation are reduced simultaneously.
The same principle has also been applied to the stimulating of sweat production for chemical analysis.
