Heat treatment is used extensively in the physiotherapy department for the relief of conditions such as pain, muscle spasm, stiffness and inflammation. Heat may be applied by conduction through the skin using a bath (water or wax), a hot pack (e.g. hydrocollator pack), or it may be applied remotely using electromagnetic radiation such as short waves, microwaves, infrared, or by ultrasound.
