Usually used in pairs, with a headband, they have many applications, but have particular importance in audiology since most hearing tests are performed using an audiometer having both air conduction (using headphones) and bone conduction. Audiometric headphones are almost always electromagnetic (moving coil) devices and may be equipped with special noise-excluding ear muff surrounds for use when the ambient noise is too great to achieve accurate results. A common type in audiometric application is the Telephonics TDH39 (or 49) with MX41-AR cushions.
