Removal of toxins from the blood, particularly in renal failure, may be achieved by passing the blood over material which absorbs (or adsorbs) a specific or specific range of toxins. The material is usually activated carbon coated with cellulose, to reduce damage to the blood. As yet, such devices are not sufficiently well developed for normal clinical use except for the treatment of poisoning.
