This is a general term for a device measuring angles. In medical work they are encountered in orthopaedics for measuring the flexion of joints and tilt of the spine. They may be simple mechanical devices of the pendulum type, some of which may be designed to show on X-ray images, or electronic types including optical polarizing filters or light reflectors.
