GEIGER-MULLER TUBE

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References: 3

This is a particularly sensitive form of ionization chamber filled with neon or argon gas at a low pressure. The electrodes are a central wire, surrounded by a metal tube, between which a high voltage is applied. A detectable electric current may flow following ionization of a single particle of gas since the acceleration of the ions towards the electrodes causes further ionization. These tubes may be used in radiation detectors, particularly for detecting and estimating the activity of radio- nuclides.
