GASTROSCOPE

Typical Number in Hospital: 5 Cost Bands: 4 References: 4

The examination or treatment of sites within the stomach, oesophagus and small intestines may be achieved using a long flexible endoscope employing fibre-optic transmission of illuminating light and the image from within the gut to an eyepiece at the distal end. Controls at the telescope end enable the tip to be manipulated to the position required.

The endoscope contains extra channels for the infusion or withdrawal of liquid or gas, or for the passage of sampling catheters or instruments for electrosurgery, laser surgery, and for cutting, grasping, and crushing. The introduction of flexible endoscopes has enabled many surgical treatments to be undertaken without entry through the skin. For instance, the treatment of ulcers and in particular the control of bleeding can be achieved by a relatively minor operation from the point of view of the patient.
