Some equipment and surgical instruments may be disinfected or sterilized in a fumigation unit, usually employing formalin in a special cabinet. This may be a rack for the instruments held in perforated trays over flat trays containing formalin, or it may be a closed cabinet into a which whole trolley can be wheeled carrying an anaesthetic machine, ventilator, infant incubator or even an operating table. In these larger types the formalin may be nebulized and blown into the apparatus inside, and they may have a flue to remove the vapour from the room. The technique is not ideal but may provide the only practical solution for large systems. Examples of the larger systems are the Drager Aseptor, and the Vickers formalin disinfection unit.
