FUEL CELL OXYGEN ANALYSER

Typical Number in Hospital: 10 Cost Bands: 2,3 References: 6

These are used for measuring oxygen concentration in anaesthetic and therapeutic gases, and can also be adapted for blood oxygen measurement. As the name implies, this is essentially a small electrical generating cell which requires oxygen to enable the chemical reaction to take place. It uses potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte contained behind an oxygen permeable membrane (usually PTFE - Teflon) with a gold-plated sintered steel cathode and a lead anode.

They are relatively slow acting and the cell has a limited life depending on oxygen exposure. They can be made to fit into a T-piece in an anaesthetic circuit.
