FREE-FIELD AUDIOMETER

Typical Number in Hospital: 3 Cost Bands: 4 References:

This is an audiometer which presents the test sounds to the patient through loudspeakers rather than through headphones. In at least one sense this is a more natural form of presentation but the test environment must be extremely quiet if it is required to identify small hearing losses. The test environment may also affect the results by creating standing waves and excessive reverberation. Therefore some free field audiometers produce a fluctuating frequency (Warble tone audiometer) which minimizes these effects. Speech audiometry may also be performed in the free field.
