This is similar to a fluorimeter (fluorometer) but employs a diffraction grating in place of a filter. This enables the identity and concentration of fluorescent materials within a test sample to be determined from the spectral lines present in the emitted light.
Such devices are used in the clinical chemistry laboratory for estimation of the concentration of some of the chemicals which occur in body fluids. A few of these are fluorescent and their concentrations can be determined by measuring the quantity of light emitted at their characteristic frequencies when illuminated by another (usually shorter) wavelength. Some materials are naturally fluorescent but other chemicals may be identified by combining with a fluorescent reagent. See Fluorimeter.
