FISTULA MONITOR

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: References:

During haemodialysis blood is normally drawn from, and returned to, a surgically created chamber (fistula) between an artery and a vein . A fistula monitor is normally used to monitor arterial blood pressure, and to prevent a blood pump from drawing more blood from a fistula than it is capable of providing. The monitor sometimes incorporates an air detection device to stop the blood pump should air be detected in the venous return blood tubing. On older machines a fistula monitor is often a separate device. Most modern machines include the device in the main console.
