This is the facemask used to induce anaesthesia and for resuscitation procedures. It is normally designed to fit the face (nose, or nose and mouth) to provide an airtight seal. The mask consists of a mount (with connection for the breathing circuit), body, and an edge. The edge must seal on to the face without the need for excessive pressure. This is achieved either by flaps, a flexible edge with stiffening, or by inflation of an air filled cuff/cushion around the edge. If the edge is inflatable there is usually a small valve protruding through which air can be injected or withdrawn to change the fit. The pressure required is low and it can be inflated by mouth.
It is difficult to fit every face and so it is usual for a range of different sizes to be available.
