A very powerful electromagnet with a pointed applicator is used to extract small metal fragments from the eye. It is brought close to the eye and the power turned on by a foot switch. Considerable heat is generated by these units and so some care is needed to avoid prolonged use or application to the skin or dressings. They are operated from the mains electricity supply.
