This is also called a Reaction rate analyser and usually works as a centrifugal analyser. Samples of body fluids are diluted and pipetted into cuvettes arranged around the outside of a centrifuge rotor. As the rotor starts to spin, reagents are drawn down into the cuvettes and a reaction begun which changes the colour or optical density of the samples in the cuvettes. The light from a colorimeter or densitometer passes through each of the cuvettes in turn so that the progress of the reaction in each cuvette is monitored throughout the reaction. The reaction rate (corresponding to the concentration of particular enzymes) can be assessed from the rate of change at the start of the reaction, or half way through. See also Reaction rate analyser.
It is also possible to measure some enzyme reaction rates using a continuous flow or discrete sample analyser.
