Anaesthesia or assisted ventilation during procedures in which access to the lung is required may be performed via a catheter fed into a bronchus so that not all the lung is being ventilated. An endobronchial tube can be passed into a section of the lung and an airtight seal created by the inflation of one or more cuffs, often covered with a nylon mesh to provide a rough surface to prevent dislodging. Types available include the Robertshaw twin lumen, Gordon Green R, the Vernon Thompson bronchus blocker, and Brompton triple cuff. This latter has a spare cuff in case of puncture during the procedure.
