A variation on the general idea employed in the CT scanner employs radioactive sources within the body. Radio- pharmaceuticals are taken up selectively by different tissues, and an ECAT scanner can be used to create an image of their distribution in a single plane (section) by rotating a gamma camera around the body. The image of radionuclide distribution is assembled by computer. Such scanners are relatively new additions to the possible imaging techniques in the nuclear medicine department.
