This is designed for accurate measurement of airflow during speech, and is intended for research applications in phonetics, linguistics, and psychology and may be used in the hospital speech therapy department. It employs two airflow transducers (anemometers) which register separately inflow and outflow of air through the nose and mouth. Each transducer unit consists of a specially designed rubber valve in which the aperture is registered by means of a light beam transmitted through the valve and detected by a photo-diode. The transducers are connected to two d.c. amplifiers and there is also a microphone amplifier and a 10 ms integrating filter. Air flow rates up to about 60 l/min are catered for. The system works through a standard anaesthetic mask.
