ELECTROPHORESIS APPARATUS

Typical Number in Hospital: 5 Cost Bands: 3 References: 9

The apparatus consists basically of a high voltage (e.g. 250 V) d.c. generator which causes a small current (4-6 mA) to flow along a paper or cellulose acetate strip linking two baths of buffer solution. Samples of body fluids are introduced on to the strip and individual components (proteins, enzymes, and antibodies) move at different rates along the strip under the influence of the electric currents. After a time the process is arrested and the strip is fixed and stained for examination under a densitometer which produces a graph of optical density identifying concentration of the particular components.
