Direct electric current passing through the body causes chemical changes due to electrolysis of the salts. The effect can be used to destroy tissue selectively for the removal of hair and small skin blemishes. In these cases a large positive electrode is placed on the skin to provide a return path for the current and a negative electrode (cathode) with a small tip is applied to the point being treated. Such units may be called electrolysis or catholysis units.
