ELECTROANAESTHESIA APPARATUS

Typical Number in Hospital: Cost Bands: 2 References: 4

Something resembling the state of chemically induced anaesthesia may be achieved by passing pulsed electrical currents of 5-50 mA through the head for several minutes. This is similar to electrosleep treatment but employs currents 10 to 100 times greater. The mechanism of operation is poorly understood and is little used.

The apparatus for electroanaesthesia is a conventional electrical stimulator with controls to vary the pulse rate, pulse width, and voltage or current. The current is normally passed through the head between the frontal and occipital locations employing large area electrodes usually covered with saline- soaked gauze sponges.
