This is a type of electrostatic or capacitor microphone. However, the main feature is that no external polarization voltage is required. This is achieved by the use of a special dielectric medium (electret) between the two plates of the capacitor. These microphones can be extremely small (they are the usual type found in hearing aids) and can have extremely good technical specifications.
