Gravity-fed fluid infusion systems are normally set up by the nurse by checking the drop rate in the giving set drip chamber against a watch. Many infusion pumps and controllers use the drop rate (detected optically) to determine the quantity of fluid being infused, and devices now exist simply to detect and display the drop rate without actually controlling the flow.
The devices are relatively small in size and clip on to the drip chamber, and contain an electronic circuit to calculate the drop rate and present it on a digital display. The devices are useful in the setting up of drip systems, and also in longer-term monitoring of the drip rate.
