This is a device intended to show the radiation dose-rate occurring in an X-ray beam. Since dose rate (rads/min) is the rate of X-ray absorption, a dose-rate meter is in fact no more than an exposure meter. The dose-rate is inferred from the exposure.
Exposure rate is sensed in an ionization chamber or scintillator, and such devices are used in radiation protection monitoring or in the X-ray department for personnel monitoring and equipment performance checking.
