This is a device for calculating the X-ray exposure, at a point within an X-ray beam. The desired quantity is often X-ray dose (rads) but since dose calculation requires information about X- ray absorption in the tissues, dose can only be inferred.
Dosimeters detect the radiation using ionizing chambers, photographic methods, scintillators, or indirectly using thermoluminescent devices. Dosimetry systems and equipment exist within hospitals in radiation protection, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, and X-ray departments for use in personnel monitoring and X-ray set peformance checking.
