defibrillators need checking frequently since they may only be used occasionally (e.g. once a year) but must function perfectly when required. Testers are available which consist of a large (usually 50 [O]) non-inductive resistor connected to metal plates on to which the defibrillator paddles may be pressed. The action of the defibrillator is confirmed by the flash of a neon lamp connected across a low value resistor in series with the load resistor or there may be a meter to display the energy delivered in joules. A more complicated tester is required to confirm the correct action of a synchronized defibrillator (cardioverter).
