As its name implies, this machine takes the form of a breast plate. A rigid dome fits over the chest and air is pumped to make the chest wall rise and fall. This provides only a limited assistance to the lungs but has proved useful for patients in transit, in poliomyelitis and in domiciliary treatment. There is a variation on this device using a rubber bag, called the Pinkerton cuirass ventilator.
