Some electrical apparatus is very sensitive to changes in the mains supply voltage. This is particularly important where the mains supply is erratic to the extent that the performance or quality of the results from the apparatus may be impaired. A constant voltage transformer has compensating windings to allow a relatively steady output voltage during fluctuations of the input voltage within a limited range. Most apparatus is developed and produced in countries which have reliable electrical supplies and so the design is often unsatisfactory for more erratic supplies.
