Examination of the ovaries and fallopian tubes can be undertaken without major surgery by the use of a flexible endoscope (colposcope) passed through a very small incision in the abdominal wall. Space is created in the abdominal cavity by insufflation using carbon dioxide infused through a small channel in the colposcope. Another channel may permit the passage of small surgical instruments, notably for electrosurgery on the fallopian tubes for sterilization by causing a blockage in the tubes.
