This is a flexible endoscope which is passed through the anus and is manipulated to view and treat sites within the colon. Viewing round corners is achieved by conveying the illumination and the image through fibre-optic bundles. The colonoscope also includes extra channels for infusing or withdrawing liquid or gas and for passing instruments for electrosurgery, cautery, and for cutting and grasping. The use of such devices has enabled viewing and treatment within the colon to be achieved without major surgery in some cases.
