This is a crude form of EEG recorder using only one or two channels, which can be used in intensive care or during surgery. A slow-moving chart record is produced which displays the amplitude of the EEG over a period of time.
The higher levels of cerebral activity are taken as indicators of well-being. The absence of EEG signals may be judged to represent clinical death.
