CAT stands for computerized axial tomography which relates to the assembly by computer of an image of a section through the body in line with the axis of an X-ray beam. The image displayed on the CRT screen shows relative X-ray absorption at each point in the tissue section. The device is now known as a CT scanner since it is possible to construct sections in planes other than the axial plane.
