CATHETER PULLER

Typical Number in Hospital: 1 Cost Bands: 3,4 References:

A common test of urethral function in cases of urinary incontinence and urinary retention is to produce a profile of urethral closure pressure along the length of the urethra. The pressure is recorded using a tiny transducer mounted on the side or tip of the recording catheter or by using an external transducer linked to a side hole in the urethral catheter.

Devices are available to draw the catheter along the urethra at a uniform rate using a motor and gears, sometimes coupled by a cable to the point at which the catheter is gripped. In some cases an electrical signal is provided to the recording apparatus to indicate the position of the catheter to produce the profile on an X-Y plotter.

Such devices are found in the urodynamic clinic which may be in the urology, gynaecology or X-ray department.
