This can apply to any material or device for absorbing carbon dioxide but it usually refers to a device for inclusion in a rebreathing anaesthetic circuit. The expired gases pass through it and are then re-inspired together with a small supplement of fresh anaesthetic gases.
The absorber may be a canister in line with the connection from the breathing bag to the patient or it may be a canister with appropriate valves for inclusion in a circle system. The carbon dioxide is absorbed in soda-lime (calcium hydroxide plus additives) or another mixture with similar properties. The lime is supplied as granules or pellets, often with a colour indicator to show when it is spent and needs changing.
