This type of valve is used on medical gas cylinders which do not have the pin-index safety system. The turn-off mechanism points to one side and the gases are delivered vertically. They are commonly used for supplying gas for oxygen therapy (in conjunction with a reducing valve and flowmeter), and on emergency trolleys. One can also find 'hand wheel' cylinders on which there is a knob on the top of the cylinder valve and the gas comes out to the side. These systems are seen more often on larger cylinders such as those used for powering air-driven tools in operating theatres, etc.
