This is another name for a ventilator intended to provide assisted breathing. The term covers such types as:
1. Resuscitators, which are usually portable.
2. Body respirators, which assist breathing by applying pressure to the outside of the chest.
3. Lung ventilators, which apply intermittent positive pressure to the inside of the lungs (usually through an endotracheal tube).
4. Rocking apparatus, which assists breathing by making the weight of abdominal contents move the diaphragm.
