This is a trade name for a type of anaesthetic machine which is named after its inventor (an anaesthetist). However, the term is in common use to describe any general-purpose continuous flow anaesthetic machine intended to provide a variable mixture of gases and vapours for general anaesthesia. Modern machines are really quite unlike the original 1917 device.
