The Boyles vaporizer and similar types of 'bottle' are used on anaesthetic machines to vaporize ether, VAM, penthrane, trilene, etc. There is no calibration and no form of temperature compensation. It fits on to the back bar of an anaesthetic machine (i.e. downstream of the flowmeters) and has a lever to cause the gas flow to pass through, or to bypass the 'bottle'. Concentration of vapour is changed by depressing or withdrawing a plunger which causes the gases to come into more or less intimate contact with the liquid. The bottle containing the agent can be unscrewed and replaced by another.
Quite a number of these units are still seen in hospitals but they are not often used.
