This is a device for augmenting or replacing the spontaneous respiratory effort of the patient, and is used in intensive care, or at the patient's home. This type works by applying alternating force or pressure to the outside of the chest and may include the whole body cabinet type (iron lung), cuirass, and belt (Pinkerton cuirass) types.
