Surgical diathermy apparatus is used for cutting tissue without causing bleeding, and for arresting bleeding by heat coagulating the bleeding ends of small arterioles. A variation on this technique is bipolar diathermy in which high-frequency electric current is passed between the ends of a special forceps so that heating only occurs in a small region between the two arms of the device. This is more precise than monopolar diathermy and prevents the currents from passing through other parts of the body. Since the intention is to coagulate tissue and not to cut it, a diathermy set operating with a bipolar probe is sometimes called a bipolar coagulator.
