This consists of a transducer, amplifier, signal processor and display. The object is to provide a visual or audible indication of some physiological function which it may be possible to learn to control. The signals monitored may include the ECG, EEG, EMG, plethysmogram, or thermal signal. Conditions to be controlled may include high blood pressure, consciousness, epilepsy, heart rate, insomnia, migraine, muscle spasm, or emotional stress.

Best known is the control of the EEG, particularly the alpha rhythm, as an aid to relaxation. In this case the alpha rhythm is extracted from the EEG and displayed as an optical or auditory signal, and the patient learns to increase or decrease the strength of the signal.
